Home theater design: layout, dimensions and setup

A home theater works when the room supports the screen rather than competing with it. Seating distance, screen size, and acoustic treatment are the three decisions that determine whether the space feels intentional.
Distance and scale
A common rule is to sit at a distance of 1.5 to 2.5 times the screen diagonal. Closer feels immersive; farther feels more like a living room that happens to have a large display. Choose based on how you actually watch.

Screen height should keep the centre of the image near seated eye level. Mounting too high forces a constant upward gaze and makes long sessions uncomfortable.
Light and sound
Control ambient light with dimmers, blackout options, or careful placement away from bright windows. Even a good screen struggles against uncontrolled daylight. For sound, soft surfaces — rugs, curtains, upholstered seating — reduce harsh reflections without requiring a full studio treatment.
If the room also serves everyday living, plan dual lighting scenes: one for viewing, one for conversation. The equipment should disappear visually when it is not in use.
Keep the layout honest
Cable runs, speaker positions, and ventilation for electronics need space in the plan early. Retrofitting after finishes are complete is costly. A simple, well-measured layout beats a complex one that was never resolved on paper.
