Open-plan kitchens: zoning without walls

Open-plan rooms fail when every activity competes for the same visual and acoustic space. Zoning without walls means using furniture, lighting, and floor transitions to create clear areas while keeping the volume continuous.
Define without dividing
A change in flooring, a pendant over the dining table, or a low bookshelf can mark a threshold. The goal is legibility: you should feel when you have moved from one zone into another.

Keep sight lines open where they matter — to the garden, to the kitchen while children play — and accept partial screening where storage or services need cover.
Kitchen as anchor
In many renovations the kitchen island becomes the social centre. Size it for both work and gathering, and leave enough clearance for people to pass behind stools. Extractor noise and cooking smells need real engineering, not only a stylish hood.
Acoustic comfort
Hard floors and open volumes amplify sound. Rugs, upholstered seating, and soft window treatments do more for daily comfort than another decorative object. If the room will host both cooking and conversation, plan absorption early.
A successful open plan still has edges. Soft ones. When zones are clear, the space feels larger and calmer at the same time.
